antacids

Antacids are usually chew tablets or fluids which we take orally to neutralise the acid in the stomach when we have indigestion and heartburn.

Although they give quick and effective relief they should never be used over long periods of time. They usually contain aluminium, calcium, magnesium or sodium salts and could change the blood values of these metals and lead to neurological, cardiovascular and digestive system problems. A low pH (high acidity) in the stomach is one of our main defences against bacteria that are ingested with food and neutralizing this acid barrier often leads to infections. Furthermore, any reduction in stomach acidity may interfere with proper digestion and could impair the availability of certain nutrients such as the B group of vitamins and iron.
